Sumbawagen English Competition 2014: Enjoy Your English!!!
Hi,
guys! My name is Fahmi. Now, I would like to share you about my experience
during Sumbawagen English Competition 2014. Are you excited for this??! Let’s
check it out!
Well,
Sumbawagen English Competition is an activity for Sumbawagen team members to
learn English more—as we know Sumbawagen team will compete in iGEM 2014 which
will be held in MIT, Boston, US. The first thing that we have to know about our
English fluency is to measure how good we have learned it. Miss Sausan Nafisah,
our instructor, held this competition to measure our English fluency, so for
the next occasions we have known what we should improve from ourselves. The top
six or eight students will get an intensive program to improve their English
skill.
There
are three challenges that we should do to pass the competition. The first is
speaking, where in this section we will explain a poster—all teams explained
movie posters—to other members, then there will be a question-answer section.
Each team has ten minutes to speak and ten minutes to answer the questions. The
second one is listening. And the third one is writing. Well, this text is our
last challenge!
The
competition was held on Friday, June 27, 2014 at Panto Daeng mess at 8.30 AM.
There were 7 groups and a single perform. And well, I was the single one, hiks!
Well, it’s okay for me, LOL. I became the first performer, and explained my
movie poster entitled ‘Kimi Ni Todoke’, a Japanese romantic drama movie. For
me, this movie is so… sweet! I was really interested to explain this movie.
Then, from all questions from my friends: Cindy, Fajri, Abdhi, and Azhar, the
most interesting question for me was from Fajri. He asked me, “What is the
special thing from this movie?”. And my first answer was, “Because of Kazehaya’s
smile.” All people laughed that time, included myself. Yeah, honestly I like
Miura’s smile. He looks so fresh and shining when he smiles, so I became his
fan, LOL. But I also answered I like the ending which was so sweet for me. The
most difficult to answer was Cindy’s. She just asked me, “What is the other
moral value in this movie beside love and friendship?” Well, I just wanted to
say, “Do a good thing for people every day because it will bring a good thing
for you too.” But hey! I talked too much and I even did not understand what I
said, LOL.
The
section continued with 7 group’s presentation: Adel-Fajri with 3 Idiots,
Cindy-Nugrah with One Piece, Yuli-Azhar with Wreck It Ralph, Un-Cendra with Up,
the suddenly single performer, Abdhi, with Sword Art Online, Rian-Asma with 5
cm, and Arif-Indah with Hello Ghosts. They were also good in explain their
posters. I only ever watched 5 cm and Hello Ghosts, but all movies sound
interested.
After
praying and having lunch, we continued for the second section: listening. Well,
it was my worst section. I have to improve myself really much for it. First, we
listened a conversation—one conversation for each person—then we had to answer
Miss Sausan’s questions. Well, my turn was bad. I heard a conversation about a
man’s journey in France. However, I could not understand the whole topic, so I
could not answer the questions well. It had not finished yet. Then we watched
some videos together and answer the questions. And again, from 4 videos and 5
questions, I only could answer 2 questions well! Too bad :’(
However,
in the end of the competition, Miss Sausan gave me a key chain from South
Korea. Yippie, I got it! :’D
In
the beginning of the competition, she told us if the most impressive
performer will get a key chain from South Korea. I swore I really want it!
However, I never thought about the key chain when I joined the sections. I just
want to measure my ability, so I was really grateful for it.
