Friday, June 27, 2014. After cooking competition called "COOKING SKILLS, the next challenge is divided into three stages, namely to test the speaking, listening, and writing in English is called" ENGLISH COMPETITION ". Where the purpose of this competition as an assessment of selection of students who will represent Sumbawagen follow International Genetically Engineerd Machine (IGEM), which this year is located at MIT, Boston, USA followed by students from all over the world. The first challenge of this competition is to present the movie poster, the challenge is to examine the way we speak the English language. Fahmi get first lottery in present of Korean movie poster is entitled "Kimini Todoke", a lot of explanation of Fahmi which makes me confused, because I also do not like the Korean movie genre. For the next turn is Adel and Isro, Indian film presentation of "The 3 Idiots", they get a lot of questions from other friends and great they were able to answer all the questions given. The next group is the group of Cindy and Nugrah as a third group. Their presentation titled anime film "One Piece", Cindy and Nugrah explain what characteristics and background of this film. And the moral message I got from this movie there are a lot of examples like" we have to fight for what we want and not easy to despair. "Next is my group with Yunianti, we as a group poster presentation presentation the fourth film entitled "up". We explained the moral message of the film is that we have to fulfill one's promise for all people even if they have gone. The fifth group Rian and Asma, Indonesian film presentation and only them that are presentation original Indonesian movie. And the moral of this movie is about how five friends maintain friendships, promises and care for one another. presentation subsequent solo / himself frankly presentation. Constructing of the film I was confused, namely the presentation anime movie "sword art online" from Abdhi. In addition to the presentation of the film is also hard to understand I've never seen before and it makes me confused. The last group of this challenge is a group of seven is a wise and beautiful. They took a Korean comedy "Hello Ghost". This film tells us about how to survive without my family and parents. One thing I forget is the presentation of a group of couples between Azhar and Yuli, they presentation a poster entitled "Wreck It Ralph". moral message contained in the film is "why we want to be someone else to get something while we can get it by being ourselves. Clocks showing the time 12:10, which means it's time to perform Friday prayers. Ms Sausan told us to come back at 13:15 to begin the next test. The next challenge is how the English language competitions listening to other people talk. It is very difficult to understand when people from other countries talk. Listening session has been split into two steps. The first step is to listen to the speakers one by one guy and then Ms. Sausan provide questions one to three or five questions after the speaker has stopped. Speaker can repeat only for twice, but Ms. Sausan make me very nervous and question what I want to say is lost due to nervousness. The next session is watch the video and answer the question that has been given at the beginning of this session. There are four films, some examples of films like "RIO 2" HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON "and the films have a question, I forgot the fourth movie and I can not write the name of the movie one by one. These challenges also present in the writing competition. We instructed for write about the activities on the day of competition and then we have to Sumbawagen blog post. We've all tried to do our best so that the team Sumbawagen 2014 can provide the best for UTS in the IGEM competition this year.

Today’s June 29th 2014, after mid semester we have English competition with Ms. Sausan Nafisah. I am very happy today. English is my favorite, in my mind English is my soul, because I know English is like a tool can be connected us to the world. Adel and I as the first group that will be presentation today. Adel and I had choose 3 idiot. I think Indian films it’s so awesome. When I was watched some films Indian like Jab tak hai jan, Chennai Express, My name is khan, and so on, my hearth  have been found  his special thing.

My story today it’s one of the special story about Sumbawagen. our mission today is presentation about the movie. First presentation from Fahmi was presented about “Kimi no todoke” its Japanese films with the romantics story between Sawakazee and kazake. Fahmi said “ the special things from this films is kazake smile, because it was so special and unique”. Second presentation from  Nugrah and Cindy group were presented about “One Piece”,when the first time i watch this film I was very confuse, because so many monster, pirates, and Luffy. Luffy is “The Man who cannot die” No matter how big and how strong his enemies, he can won the battle. One piece is the one of the famous cartoon films from japan. Maybe this not my genre films. The third from Cendra and Un group were presented about “UP”,  I got so many lesson from this film about keep the promise, hardwork, love, and friendship, maybe i can imagine this film by this sentence “ Nothing is imposible, anything can happen as long as we believe” . The fourth from Rian and Asma Group were presented about “5 cm”, I had watched this film and  I think this film is that impossible story but happen in the real life, from the friendship between 5 person for ten years, it’s so amazing. I hope in my life story my friends in Biotechnology can be my best friend until end of my life. The fifth from Abdi and  Gita Group were presented about “Sword Art Online”, honestly i can understand about this movie, collaborate between game, love, friendship, and the principal of the game. But in the other side i Saw Abdi Effort to presentation this film,  I think he want deliver to us “ How is very Challenge and interesting this film” and I very respect it. The last from Indah and Arif group were presented about “Hello Ghost”, I just like two movies from Korea, first is Dream High and Second is Hello ghost, because both dream high and Hello ghost is very meaningful for me, learn of life, spirit, and You do not live at once. You only die once and live every day.

After break for Jum’at Pray. Our agenda is listening test. My heart beats quickly, but I still self-confidence, because I know if you want pass the test, you will need some things that can be make you more stronger. Ms. Sausan said “Listen the conversation carefully and will be repeat twice”. In my turn, I listen the conversation so carefully, i write everything that can help me to answer the question. The first question “why the person have pigeon?” and I answered the Pigeon used to transportation, In my mind “ it’s that true??? Transportation ??? Hehehe, I just answered that, but  I think it’s the best answer for this question” . The second question “How long time we need to the other factory”  and I answered three minutes, off course will self-confidence, because I know it’s the correct answer for this question. I was very satisfied although I just correct for one answer, but it’s ok.

Friday, June 27 2014 at 08.00 am precisely on Biotechnology courses held a competition that English competition. The goal of this competition as a selection assessment the students who will represent Sumbawagen to follow the international genetic engineering machine (IGEM), which this year is located at MIT, Boston USA which is followed by the students from all over the world.

The competition is divided into three parts that are speaking, listening, and writing. In the first phase the students of biotechnology faculty  is divided into seven groups and one solo. Solo categories is Fahmi Dwi Laksono, group one that is Mochammad Isro Alfajri and Adelia Elviantari, group two is Mohammad Al-Azhar and Yulianti, group three is Nugrah Analiadi Putra and Cindy Suci Ananda, group four is Yunianti and Cendra Harri Pahlawan, group five is Abdi Surya Perkasa and Gita Peny Lestari, the group six Rian Adha Ardinata and Asmawati, and the last group is Arif Muhamad and Indah Nurulita. In this stage, each group should explain the movie posters of their own choice within ten minutes and ten minute longer to answer questions from other groups or audiences. The first phase of English competition which was opened by the solo category Fahmi Dwi Laksono. Fahmi describes a poster titled Korean drama "Kimi ni Todoke", which describes the Korean drama about high school romance a girl name Sodako. In daily life both at home and at school she is always alone, a little way, and facial hair which hung forward almost covering her eyes which makes it almost like a ghost. Because it looked like no one would approach him. Day by day Sodako through life like that in isolate and aloof. But one day there was a man who approached her and always play with her. This is the beginning of a  Sodako love story. Because this man, sodako slowly changing attitudes, behavior, and appearance that makes it a fight the men. But love Sodako remain in men who have made ​​it better and they live together. Outline that's roughly described by my colleague Fahmi Dwi Laksono.

At this stage I was at the lottery four where each group that developed, I feel so nervous. This is time for my group to present our poster. We presented a poster entitled "One Piece". One Piece is an anime and manga about a group of pirates led by Monkey D. Luffy who went looking for the legendary treasure called One Piece. Luffy into a rubber man who has the power to lengthen his body after accidentally eating the Gomu Gomu fruit, one of the devil fruit. During the trip Luffy met many new friends and enemies are varied. One Piece was created by Oda Eiichiro. The Comic started in 1997 in Shonen Jump published by Shueisha and is still continuing. The presentation we get excited quite a lot of the audience. Until we both almost overwhelmed answer questions from their. Alhamdulillah our presentation went smoothly although my speaking somewhat haltingly.

        Then, presentation followed by a group of four to seven groups. Where each group get so high enthusiasm from the audience. The first phase ended at 12.00 pm because the man have to take a  Friday prayer.

        At 2:00 pm we went on part  two of English competition is listening. The second phase carried out individually not in groups. At this part I get a lottery number six and number eight dialogue. I was so nervous and  sweated. Alhamdulillah I can capture the contents of the dialogue being played although only slightly. But I have not been satisfied with my English language skills current. I will try harder to improve my English. And the second phase of English competition ended at 3:30 pm after all the lottery has been developed.

Next  three stages is English writing competition. This stage is done at home, is makes the essay or report English competition contest from start to finish by using the English language. Where we were given three days to complete this task. I feel really happy because I've participated in this race. Because I can measure how far my English language skills and a lot of memorable events.

My name is Cindy Suci Ananda. I’m seventeen years old. I’m a student of Technobiology Faculty of Sumbawa University of Technology. I’m student leader of Sumbawagen Team of International Genetically Engineered Machine (IGEM). Here I will tell you about my experience of English Skill Competition (ESC).

Two days ago, on Friday, June 27^th 2014, all members of Sumbawagen team follow a competition called English Skill Competition (ESC). ESC is the fourth competition that held by our faculty, after Fund rising project, wet lab project and cooking skill competition. The purpose of ESC are to sharpen student’s ability in English. Then, from this competition there will be 6 to 8 student who have ability that good enough in English will have an opportunity to have an English training. This competition guide by Ms. Sausan Nafisah, S.Si (Miss Sausan), daily instructor of Sumbawagen Team that will train our English, to prepare Sumbawagen Team on iGEM jamboree in Boston, USA.

            In ESC, each group consist of two students, and my partner for this competition is Nugrah Analiadi Putra on Group 4. We have prepared for this competition maximally.

Well iGEMers, let us look the competition.

At 08.45 am ESC was started. It held in Panto Daeng in our lecturer house. This competition has 3 stage, they are speaking, reading and writing. The first stage is speaking. For speaking test, each group have a task to present a poster of our favorite movie in 10 minutes. Ms. Sausan give us freedom to choose the theme of the movie, whether it’s about love, friendship, comedy, or etc. Well, for this challenge Nugrah and I chose Japanese anime, namely “One Piece”.

Why “One Piece”?

            I really like this movie, because this movie is a good example about true friendship, and high spirit to reach out dream. One Piece is a movie from Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. This movie tells us about the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy whose body rubber who wishes to be the next Pirates King by finding the world’s ultimate treasure, known as “One Piece” in gathers himself a diverse crew. Luffy with his crew sail the seas in pursuit of their dreams together, no matter what other people say about their dream, they will reach their dream, with hard work, high spirit, and passionate about their dream.

Nugrah and I, begin the presentation around 10.15 am. In our presentation, we explained about story of the movie in general, characters, moral values ​​and which parts are preferred. We were presented our movie in 10 minutes. After our presentation was over, our friends were very enthusiastic to give questions about our presentation, but only 4 question that we answered because of the limited time. I think we are success enough in presented our movie. Unfortunately, during our presentation I made a mistake. I was wrong to interpret the intent of question put by Indah to us. Maybe, because I’m too enthusiastic, I became less in hear the question “how the ending of this movie that you want?” which I hear is “how the ending of this movie”. That’s a fatal mistake, I think because I was aware my mistake, after Indah explained it to me when our presentation was over. But I don’t think much about it, I realize it and make it as a lesson not to repeat it again. So, I should learn to listen to others better in the future.

            The first stage finished, and will followed by the second stage. However, we need a short break to take a lunch and prayer in 60 minutes. Listening stage started at 01.30 pm. In this stage, we should listen to the dialog that is played in 2 times, and answer the question from Miss Sausan about what we’ve listened.

Before my turn for a first session of listening, I had to think of a strategy how can I understand the essence of the phrase that is played in 2 times, because it difficult to understand the meaning of what the speaker talking about. My strategy is I noted some points which may be the main idea in the phrase. Then, when the second round, I tried to analyze roughly what the intent of the phrase.

My turn came. I pull my lottery phrases that I will listen. Previously I say Basmallah(bismillahirrahmanirrahim).  I got 3 lottery phrases, as I expected. I also practice the strategies that I have thought of before. The result was not too bad, because I can answered the question that given by Miss Sausan. Unfortunately, in the second session I can’t answer some of the questions correctly, it’s too difficult for me. In this season all of the student should answer the question about the video that was played by Miss Sausan.

The last session of listening is the end of the ESC.  ESC is the good training for us to sharpen my ability in English. That’s make my spirit become high to learn English more again. I’ll learn English like Luffy and his crew sail the seas to pursuit their dream. I believe that English can help us to have a good future.

WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY
